MOE ExCEL Fest 2021
![]() | This year, with the aim to benefit other teachers in the fraternity, Mdm Magahletchimi facilitated a workshop during the Teacher Conference ExCEL Fest 2021 on 3 June 2021, entitled “The Art of Appreciating Tamil Literary Poems in Modern Context through Gamification”. The zoom sharing focused on JWSS pedagogy of Learning through doing and inquiry, using enhanced features in the Student Learning Space, and an ‘Escape Room’ using the ‘DECK.TOYS’ online gameplay tool. More than 20 primary and secondary schools Tamil teachers attended the workshop. |
Teachers' Investiture Ceremony (TIC) for the Class of 2020
Our History and English teacher, Mr Bradley Soh, was interviewed by Chinese newspaper, Lianhe Zaobao on February 6. He was the Valedictorian at the recent NIE Teachers’ Investiture Ceremony 2020. In the article, Mr Soh talked about his teaching experience during home-based learning and how he hope to use this experience to encourage self-directed learning and further strengthen students’ critical thinking skills. Malay
Language Arif Budiman Teachers’ Conference
Malay Language Center of Singapore hosted the annual Malay Language Arif
Budiman Teachers’ Conference Seminar on 17 March 2020. The Malay Language
Centre of Singapore invited Assistant
Professor Dr Elmi Nekmat, of the Department of Communication and New Media,
National University of Singapore as a keynote speaker for the seminar as well
as guest of honor, Dr Muhammad Faishal
Ibrahim, Minister of State in the Ministry for Home Affairs and the
Ministry for National Development. In addition, seminar participants had the opportunity
to attend 43 presentations of teachers from primary, secondary and primary
colleges during a parallel conference session related to the theme of the
seminar which is "Utilizing Technology, Enhancing Learning". The
seminar participants also had the opportunity to attend 10 reruai exhibition on
the application of ICT in teaching and learning of the Malay language in the
classroom. Two of our Malay Language teachers, Ms Yasmin Hussein and Ms Sherlyn
Salim, presented a research project done during Jurong West Secondary School’s Professional Learning Community (PLC). The
project, which was presented in 2019 as a research paper, focused on working
collaboratively to attain high levels of student achievements in alignment with
school goals, featured the usage of social media platform to encourage
authentic learning of Malay proverbs. The project was then selected in 2020 to
be showcased as it highlighted the vital role of infusing a culture of
sustained and continual learning through digital platforms relevant to
students’ needs, which would impact student outcomes.

JOYFUL TEACHING - The Singapore Teaching Practice Stories | ||

In the 5th issue of Joyful Teaching - The Singapore Teaching Practice Stories, our teacher, Mr Teo Eng Tong is featured using inquiry-based lessons (IBL) to teaching Social Studies in class. Mr Teo used IBL to help students make connections to the concepts they are studying in Social Studies to make it more relevant to students.

Singapore International Science Teachers' Conference 2019 |

The school would like to acknowledge our Science Department (Physics) Teacher, Mr Huzaini Alwi, who successfully submitted an abstract for a paper presentation and was selected to present at Singapore International Science Teachers' Conference 2019 on the 20th November. Collaborating with a colleague from Academu of Singapore Teachers (AST), Mr Huzaini presented to a group of participants on the topic of "Enhancing Deeper Learning through Scientific Argumentation". Participants were led through a series of activities and were actively engaged throughout the session as seen in the pictures below. Mr Zubir joined NIE in 1990 and served as an education officer since 1992. He has been with the school since its inception in 2001, and is currently the Subject Head for Malay Language. |

The school also wants to congratulate Mr So on being appointed the head coach of the basketball boys team for the 10th ASEAN School Games 2018. This is the third consecutive year that Mr So is appointed as the head coach for the basketball boys team. He was also appointed as head coach previously in 2010 and 2011. |

The Singapore-Malaysia MOE Games was started in the 1970s and has been hosted yearly on an alternate basis between Singapore and Malaysia. The event has encouraged our Singapore MOE officers and teachers to interact with each other, as well as with their Malaysian counterparts. This year, the MESRC – MESCA MOE Games was held from the 4th to the 6th May (Friday to Sunday) in Sarawak, Malaysia, and Mr Zaidy (left) was selected as one of the representatives. Other than that, Mr Zaidy(left) and Mr Azri (right) have also represented MOE in the Public Service STAR Sepak Takraw games on the 21st and 28th of January this year. The objectives of the STAR (‘Star Team-up for Active sports and Recreation’) games are to promote a healthy lifestyle in the public service and to foster camaraderie amongst public officers. |

With the theme, “Future Ready: Inspire, Connect and Transform”, Ms Carissa Chui and Mr Fauzul were involved in the Meet-the-Practitioners (MTP) during the iCTLT 2016, where teachers as reflective practitioners underwent the different stages of design to achieve meaningful ICT learning experiences and other delegates interacted with them to understand their roles as practitioners in designing, enacting and evaluating learning experiences in a digital learning environment. 8th ASEAN School Games (ASG) Coach for Basketball (Boys) Team |

The 2016 ASEAN School Games (ASG), officially known as the 8th ASEAN School Games was hosted by Thailand from July 21–29, 2016, and saw the participation from student-athletes under the age of eighteen. The ASEAN Schools Games (ASG) is an annual sporting event which aims to enhance friendship among students around the Southeast Asian region. It also seeks to promote ASEAN solidarity among the youth through school sports and provide opportunities for school athletes to engage in cultural exchange. Mr Joe So (left) was the Basketball Coach of the Singapore School Sports Team at the 8th ASEAN Schools Games (ASG). As the coach, he played a key role in the selection and training of the Basketball Boys team. He also volunteered to coach the Girls team during the ASG competition season. Kudos to Mr So for being such as inspiration to the players! |

Designing Learning with ICT is a repository for ICT teaching and learning resources contributed by teachers that demonstrate how ICT is used productively for quality learning in support of the total curriculum. Both Ms Jenny Chee and Mr Isaac Tan shared their History ICT lesson and its relevant resources on Impact of Hitler up on the OPAL, the one-stop learning and content management system for all staff of the Ministry of Education (MOE). |

MOE Ideas Bank – Cluster Best Suggestion |

The MOE Ideas Bank is a platform for MOE Staff to share and recognise innovative ideas. JWSS promotes this by dedicating a session of the Professional Learning Community at the end of each term to allow staff to contribute their ideas through the MOE Ideas Bank. This helps to promote ground-up initiative and encourage innovations led by staff for school improvement.

Mr Indra (left) presented in the AED (T&L) Networked Learning Community (NLC) from March 2016 to August 2016. He had facilitated the concurrent session on “Use of Synectics to Facilitate Creative Thinking in Art” and contributed to the professional capital of the AED colleagues who attended the AED Symposium on 23 August 2016. The participants of the AED Symposium had found the sharing of effective practices, resources, collegial and collaborative discussions meaningful. |
