Jewel Challenge 2018 for West Zone Primary Schools
Jewel Challenge 2018 for West Zone Primary Schools
Overview
On Friday 19 October 2018, a total of 72 students from 9 Primary Schools participated in the annual JeWel Challenge 2018 organised by the JWSS Talent Development Committee. The JeWel Challenge is part of the school’s Talent Development Programme and the challenge is designed for Primary Six students from schools in the West Zone with the following aims:
- to stretch the students’ thinking in the disciplines of Science and Mathematics
- to enable students to apply scientific and mathematical concepts to solve problems in innovative ways
- to engage students in the learning of Science and Mathematics in a fun and interactive manner.
The programme for the day included the following:
Challenge 1: The JW Lego Maze
For Science JeWel, students learnt basic coding using WeDo 2.0 app. Students were required to think critically, plan and strategise to achieve the intended objectives of the challenge. With teamwork and correct strategy, students collaborated their Lego robots and they had to battle it out to obtain as many bricks within the shortest time!

Challenge 2: That's Cryptic...
Student participants will work in their teams and be given coded puzzles to decode. By following the clues provided, teams would be able to decrypt the hidden message at the end of the challenge.
Challenge 3: I can be a "director" too!
Students learnt about how camera placement and movement influence the way viewers perceive and react to a character or action on screen. Students created a storyboard on a given topic and scores will be based on the effective use of camera placement and movement to tell the story and communicate the given message.
Prize Winners
After the exciting sessions of activities, these teams emerged as the top 3 winners of the JeWel Challenge 2018. Congratulations!
